PRI News:

Los Alamos has many options for supporting health and wellness, including a posture alignment coach, Sandra West, who uses exercises to retrain the body, align joints, and regain functional movements.

What is the result? Posture therapy reduces pain, improves mobility, and builds the body’s strength and resilience to injury. West teaches group classes and offers personalized sessions.

West teaches three classes each Wednesday:
  • Balance Posture meets 11-11:45 a.m. at Blue Sky Pilates and the first class is free;
  • Therapeutic Posture mat class meets 12:30-1:15 p.m. at the Betty Ehart Senior Center; and
  • Therapeutic Posture chair class meets 1:30-2:45 p.m. at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.
The therapeutic classes have a suggested donation of $5/class.

Colleen Hanlon commented, “I have been a long time participant in Sandra West’s Balance Posture classes that use the Egoscue Method® (held at Blue Sky Pilates Studio). My posture has greatly improved, resulting in less vertigo and shoulder pain. And I am more flexible—very important, as I approach 80 years of age. I couldn’t ask for a more empathic, caring and helpful teacher.”

During a personalized session, West designs a menu of exercises to meet the person’s needs and goals and teaches the exercises. Afterward, the person will continue to do the exercises and see the benefits. West also provides printed and digital resources along with email support. Individual sessions identify old movement patterns and reestablish functional movement through exercise.

“I’m kind of amazed, to the point of disbelief, at what a difference one session with Sandra and three days of exercises have made for me,” Kate Barrere wrote. “I now feel balanced and stable, sensations that I had lost since my surgery. I also felt like I didn’t know how to walk right after my surgery, but now I do!”

West has taught posture classes since 2015 and holds the personalized sessions in the Los Alamos Chiropractic office at 2610 Trinity Dr. #14. West has training in the Egoscue Method®, from the Postural Restoration Institute, and with Jessica Kisiel, The Pain Free Athlete (www.thepfathlete.com). West uses her experience to help people reach their goals and live pain-free. To learn more, visit www.achievepainfree.com or contact Sandra West (Sandra@achievepainfree.com or 505.500.4489).

The Egoscue Method®, founded by Pete Egoscue, is based on the body’s need to move. Egoscue believes that pain is due to joint misalignment. This therapy technique uses movement to align joints, teach muscles optimal function, and strengthen weak postural muscles. Egoscue’s Pain Free book can be borrowed from our local library. For more information about this method, visit www.egoscue.com.

The Postural Restoration Institute®’s mission is to “explore and explain the science of postural adaptations, asymmetrical patterns, and the influence of polyarticular chains of muscles.” For more information on this organization, visit www.posturalrestoration.com.
