Plein Air Painters Of New Mexico Hosts ‘Paint Out’ In Jemez Springs April 21-29 Followed By Exhibition

PAPNM News:

JEMEZ SPRINGS — Fifty-five artist members of Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM) will be at work painting in Jemez Springs and  surrounding area April 21-26

The event culminates in a show at the Jemez Fine Art Gallery at 17346 N.M. 4 in Jemez Springs April 29 through May 10.

This is the first time in three years that the event has taken place in Jemez Springs.

“For anyone who is enchanted by the dramatic landscapes of Jemez Springs, it is fascinating to see an artist starting with a blank canvas then within a couple hours have a finished painting revealing their singular perspective,” PAPNM Co-chair Wendy Ahlm said. “We are excited to  host the event again in Jemez Springs which has amazing opportunities not only for the artists but for visitors who want to watch artists at work, and take a piece of Jemez Springs home with the resulting paintings.”

The paint out area includes Fenton Lake, Battleship Rock, Soda Dam, Bandelier National Monument, Gilman Tunnels, the Jemez Historic site, numerous fishing and picnic areas along the Jemez River, the Valles Caldera, and for those up for a short hike, Jemez Falls. The public is invited to visit the area and see the artists at work.

The painters are competing for cash and merchandise awards. The show will be judged by PAPNM Signature Member, Dick Wimberly, who has been painting outdoors for over 40 years, and has taught art to everyone from children in Albuquerque Public Schools to adults at Eastern New Mexico University. In addition to winning awards in various competitions, Wimberly is the only artist who has won three times the Jeff Potter award for best landscape by a New Mexico artist at the PAPNM National Juried Members Show. Dick has sold his work through galleries in New York, Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico and has had many one-man shows.

The public is invited to an opening at the Jemez Springs Fine Art Gallery 1-3 p.m. April 29 to see the works painted the previous week. Most of the entries will be for sale. The show will be up through May 10 at the Jemez Fine Art Gallery and there is no admission fee. The gallery is at 17346 N.M. 4 in Jemez Springs.

The Plein Air Painters of New Mexico is a non-profit, professional association of artists dedicated to the business of preserving and promoting painting “en plein air” – in the open air or outdoors. Anyone can join as an artist member (there is a $40 annual membership fee.)
