The community is invited to join local geologists Fraser and Cathy Goff, along with PEEC Sept. 13-15, for an exciting three-day geologic field trip exploring northwestern New Mexico.
The tour will start at the Los Alamos Nature Center and include visits to the iconic Ship Rock and the volcanic field of El Malpais.
On the first day, participants will travel to Ship Rock, a striking volcanic formation on the Navajo Reservation.
The second day will feature El Malpais, known for its young basaltic eruptions.
On the third day, the tour will visit El Morro to participate in the Camel Corps Commemoration. Accommodations in Gallup and Grants are available, with options for PEEC to handle bookings.
The trip is suitable for geology enthusiasts and the general public, offering a chance to explore these remarkable geological features with expert guidance.
Register early to secure your spot and consider carpooling from Los Alamos. Participants should come prepared for variable weather and bring necessary supplies for the field.
Admission ranges from $240 for PEEC members to $520 for non-members with room accommodations.
Fraser and Cathy Goff are distinguished geologists with extensive expertise in volcanology and geothermal systems. Fraser Goff, author of Valles Caldera: A Geologic History and lead author of the Geologic Map of the Valles Caldera, has conducted significant research on geothermal systems and active volcanoes worldwide, including a 26-year tenure at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Cathy Goff, an accomplished geochemist, has worked on numerous geothermal and volcanic projects across the U.S., Latin America, and beyond. Together, they have contributed to the recent geologic map of Mount Taylor volcano and are recognized for their deep knowledge and impactful research in geology.
