PEEC News:

The community is invited to visit the Los Alamos Nature Center 6:30 p.m., Wednesday to meet raptors and owls from the New Mexico Wildlife Center.

Families also will have an opportunity to learn about local habitats, responsible rehabilitation and what to do if they find an injured animal. This event is part of the Pajarito Environmental Education Center’s Summer Family Evenings series, sponsored by Del Norte Credit Union.

The New Mexico Wildlife Center, located in Española, was founded in 1986 by Dr. Kathleen Ramsay. It has grown from its original purpose of rehabilitating birds into its current mission to treat all animal species in New Mexico. Because many injured animals cannot be released back into the wild, the Wildlife Center also operates a wildlife sanctuary. Visitors are welcome to visit 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Over the course of the summer, a variety of organizations, animals and more will visit the nature center Wednesday evenings in June and July (except July 4) for Summer Family Evenings.

Upcoming Summer Family Evenings events:
  • June 27 — Meet raptors from the New Mexico Wildlife Center
  • July 11 — ScienceFest: Learn about DNA barcoding with Los Alamos Makerspace
  • July 18 — Learn about how small farms care for goats and what goats need to live happily. Meet a variety of goats, both big and small!
  • July 25 — The Harrell House of Natural Oddities will bring an amazing selection of live critters like tarantulas, scorpions, centipedes, crabs, and more! Hear amazing facts and ask questions about these unusual animals.

Summer Family Evenings would not be possible without the generous support of Del Norte Credit Union. The programs are free for PEEC members or $5 per family for non-members. No registration is required and admission can be paid at the door.
