PEEC News:

Have you wanted to go backpacking, but didn’t have the gear or experience? Well, Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) has the adventure you’ve been waiting for!

Adults and families will meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center for a short orientation at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16
Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27 will then be spent hiking up to five miles a day in the backcountry. This Family Backpacking Adventure will last a total of two days and one night.

The trip location will be determined nearer to the program dates and will depend on weather and trail conditions. Adventurers should be prepared to carry potentially heavy packs at high altitudes. Essential backpacking gear such as tents, sleeping bags, stoves, and backpacks will be coordinated at the program orientation. If needed, PEEC will provide equipment. The group will carpool from the nature center to the trailhead and back.

The Family Backpacking Adventure will be led by environmental educators Tony Hinojosa and Beth Cortright. Tony and Beth have been teaching outdoor camps and outings together for four years. In addition to leading the Backpacking Adventure for Teens over the past two summers, they spend much of their free time snowboarding, climbing, and embarking on other outdoor adventures.

Registration is required to save a spot on this outing, so sign up today! Admission for the Family Backpacking Adventure costs $64/member adult, $48/member child, $80/non-member adult, and $60/non-member child.
