SANTA FE – Effective Jan. 6, 2014, a number of roads and campgrounds on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest will be closed for the winter.
These locations often become impassable and hazardous during winter months due to significant snowfall which can make the terrain muddy, snow packed, and icy. It is necessary to close these roads and campgrounds for public safety and to protect natural resources and infrastructure.
Using any type of four-wheel motorized vehicle, two-wheel motorized vehicle, or an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on the closed roads or within the closed campgrounds will be prohibited. Snowmobiles can be used to access these areas.
Be prepared for winter weather-wet, muddy or snowy roads. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. Winter storms can occur suddenly. If one comes up, start heading home. As a minimum, we suggest you take the following items with you:
- Tire Chains
- Tow Chain
- First Aid Kit
- Warm clothing
- Full gas tank
- Matches or flares
Don’t rely on your cell phone as it may not work in many areas of the forest. We suggest you consider the Weather Ready Driving Safety Tips provided through the Weather Channel: http://www.weather.com/activities/driving/drivingsafety/drivingsafetytips/snow.html.
