COMMUNITY News:

For the sixth consecutive year the Ladies of Pajarito Mountain have sponsored the K2 Women’s Weekend. This event has historically paired the fun of skiing with the benefit of fundraising for the Anita Salas Foundation, a Northern New Mexico charity that benefits men and women diagnosed with breast cancer and women who have cervical cancer.

This year, due to lack of precipitation, the skiing part of the event was moved to Taos – and we had a blast! For the fundraising portion (and even more fun!) we are planning to hold the annual silent auction during Skiesta 2-3 p.m., March 15 at Pajarito Mountain, with registration starting at 1:30 p.m. in the Lodge.

Skiesta is a great event and this year you can contribute to a very worthy and local charity while enjoying the music of Felix y Los Gatos – Zydeco music, snow competitions for all ages, costumes, and five NM Breweries!!! The silent auction will be open to the public so tell your friends and BRING your friends!! We have lots of ski gear, including a pair of K2 Talk Back 160 cm skis, spa services: 10000 waves, facials, massages, fine art: stained glass, prints, and pottery, many fine wines!!!, handmade crafts: hats, scarves, and jewelry just to name a few of the fabulous items our local vendors have provided!

All proceeds from the silent auction go directly to the Anita Salas Memorial Fund where 95 cents of every dollar goes directly to those in need. So far $3,800 has been raised, with $800 coming from a very dedicated and caring young man from Penasco named Joseph Estrada who raised the money, with support from his mother, in memory of his aunt Brenda. Joseph earned the donated dollars by working at the library, food bank, thrift stores and his own non-profit that benefits breast cancer, called Butterflies for Life (visit Butterflie’s For Hope on Facebook or http://butterfliesforhopecancer.webs.com).

In addition, he and his family have donated beautifully hand painted t-shirts that will be available at the silent auction. Even with this generous donation, monies still far short of the annual $10,000 donation traditionally contributed. So while heading up the ski hill for the annual extravaganza, bring a checkbook and a friend and help support a most worthy cause.
