Young Eagles Flight Rally Takes to the Sky Saturday

Area young people ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies Saturday, June 15 as Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 691 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at the Los Alamos Municipal Airport.
Come to the Terminal Building at 8:30 a.m.to register for flight. Flights will begin at approximately 8:40 a.m., with registration closing at 11:30 a.m. Flights are dependent upon weather and pilot availability and will last approximately 15-20 minutes.

U.S. Army Col. Bob Loy (Ret.) Shares Experience With Operation Tomodachi
U.S. Army Col. Bob Loy (now retired) was the guest speaker at the June 4 Rotary Club lunch meeting at the Dixie Girl Restaurant in downtown Los Alamos. Loy was a liaison officer working at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo when the devastating tsunami of 2011 struck Japan’s shores. During his talk, Loy shared his experiences leading the evacuation in Operation Tomodachi. Loy is married to Rotarian Laura Loy and is the son in law of Rotarians Anne and Hal Davis. Edward Fredric Hammel, 95, a Los Alamos resident for 69 years, died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at home in Los Alamos.
He was born in New York City, New York on Jan. 6, 1918. He grew up in Mt. Vernon, NY. His father, Edward F. Hammel, Sr. was a civil engineer. His mother, Louise Schultz Hammel, was a church secretary, loving housewife and mother.
Edward Hammel graduated from Dartmouth College in 1939 with a major in chemistry. It was at Dartmouth where he also worked as a waiter in Mrs. Rood’s Eating Club, the only one that served women living in Hanover. Read More

Thompson Ridge Fire
The Thompson Ridge Fire is now 75 percent contained. The fire started May 31, 2013.
It is burning on the Valles Caldera National Preserve about two miles northeast of La Cueva.
The fire is in steep rugged terrain and is burning mixed conifer and ponderosa pine. The Arizona Central West Zone Incident Management Team, led by Incident Commander Bea Day, assumed management responsibility for the fire Sunday June 2, 2013.
