Y Targets Prevention During Diabetes Awareness Month

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and The Family YMCA is encouraging residents of Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico to learn their risks for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, and to take preventive steps to potentially reduce their chances of developing the disease.

New statistics for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that one in four Americans (86 million people) have prediabetes, up from 79 million in 2010.   • Tuesday, Nov. 18 – Dehydrator Snacks 1.0 with Lisa Johnson
  • Tuesday, Dec. 9 – Vegetarian North Indian Cuisine with Harshini Mukundan.

The classes take place at 6 p.m. in the Co+op Café and registration is available at the Co+op (95 Entrada Dr.). The Co+op’s Shop with the Chef cooking classes give local chefs the opportunity to share their love of cuisine, starting with shopping for the ingredients and taking participants through the cooking process to enjoying the final product.

Local resident and mystery author, Elena Giorgi, visited Chamisa Elementary School third and fourth graders, to share her passion of studying viruses and how that lead to her creative outlet of writing mysteries.

The theme of Chamisa this year is detectives, and students study at the “Chamisa Investigative Academy.” Giorgi came and did a presentation with an overview about viruses, are they good and bad, and how her study of viruses led to writing novels. She talked about her experience on writing books.
