We have visited several foreign countries and nowhere did we feel more welcomed than when we set foot

Legion post 90 and Boy Scout troop 122 had representatives manning clippers and rakes, making quick work of the task.

One truck load of organic waste was hauled to the Eco Station.

A BIG thanks to the Boy Scouts, the American Legion, and even one unnamed county employee, now a veteran can rest easier for another

How The Hen House Turns: A Born Again Dog

How the Hen House Turns
By CAROLYN (CARY) NEEPER Ph.D.

A Born Again Dog

She was a blond, with huge deep brown eyes that looked directly into mine until I wanted to cry out, “It’s all right. Everything’s going to be all right.”

Then she snuggled onto my lap and under my left arm and reached up to lick my face. I was new to her, a temporary foster human.

At first she trembled. She knew something was up. I kept stroking her gently, and within 10 minutes the trembling stopped. She’s was a toy cuddle-lover, probably not an inexpensive shelter dog. Her pile of “possessions” said that she had been loved.

Letter To The Editor: On Harold Morgan’s Column

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

It is a pleasure, for once, to be able to agree with Harold Morgan.

In his Wednesday column he says “The left has a mythical attachment to raiding the Permanent Fund for money to spend on education.”

I agree completely that the claimed attachment is entirely a myth. On the other hand, if he meant to say ‘mystical’ … well, we can’t all be William F. Buckley or George F. Will.

For most of the rest of the column he returned to expected for, but he concludes with: “Less ideologically driven research would

Honey And Lemon Verbena Poached Pears

My friend Kok Heong McNaughton grows an extraordinary variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers in her yard.

She recently gave me part of her harvest of lemon verbena leaves. I considered tea or other infusions before settling on a recipe for poached pears, adapted from a recipe by Daniel Orr to reduce sweetness. The recipe does not call for any alcohol in the poaching liquid, and is easily made ahead to be chilled before serving.

Letter To The Editor: Gouging Gas Prices

By J. ROBERTS
White Rock

We, like many others, had high hopes when Smith’s put in a gas station. We had hoped that gas prices in Los Alamos would be more competitive with surrounding areas, and while the old store was open our hopes were rewarded. But now with the new store we seem to have the same old gouging gas prices as before.

When one can take a short drive to Totavi, Espanola or Pojoaque and save 30 cents per gallon or more, it makes you wonder what other prices in the store are being inflated now that the store is becoming established.

We want to support the new Smith’s Marketplace as well Read More
