By MORRIE PONGRATZ
Voice of the Hilltoppers

The 18th ranked Hilltoppers lost the middle game of their “home team game” binge to the 17th ranked Artesia Bulldogs on Friday night.

The game was even at 40-40 going into the fourth quarter, but the Bulldog switch to a 2-3 zone defense in the fourth quarter effectively shut down the Toppers. Once the Bulldogs got the lead they went into a 4-corners stall and held on for the win.

The Toppers were led in scoring by sophomore guard, Jack Stewart. He had 16 points, 11 of them in the second half. The 6’5” junior post, Adam Paulson, had 13 points and 8 rebounds for the Read More

Justice Charles W. Daniels

By Justice Charles W. Daniels
New Mexico Supreme Court

On recommendation of the New Mexico Supreme Court, a bipartisan group of legislators has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 1, which would allow voters to decide whether to reform antiquated bail provisions in our state constitution. Currently, the constitution guarantees the right to get out of jail before trial for virtually all defendants, no matter how dangerous, if they can get their hands on enough money to post bond or if they can make payment arrangements with a bail bondsman.

Letter To The Editor: Wow! Wonderful Letters In Support Of HB33 Referendum

By JUDITH BJARKE-MCKENZIE
Los Alamos

Wow! I have read such wonderful letters, in support of HB33 Referendum for our schools.

Los Alamos has schools that we can truly be proud of. Money at the state level is pretty lean and in the past few elections we have passed the referendums to show our support of education. This is how we contribute to our future.

The maintenance of our facilities, as well as keeping up technology and providing activities all help to provide excellence in education. The good news is, your tax rate won’t go up.

Also, our out of district kids are children of people Read More

Pastor Granillo: It’s Complicated!

By RAUL GRANILLO

“When the LORD saw that Leah was not loved, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.” (Genesis 29:31 NIV)

Reading the story of Rachel and Leah’s competition for Jacob’s love, in the book of Genesis, is a lot like reading a Jerry Springer show in the making. It started when Jacob ended up marrying two sisters (Leah and Rachel), but really only loved Rachel. To comfort Leah, God gave her sons, which Leah thought would make Jacob love her—which didn’t work (29:34).

Rachel then got jealous and blamed Jacob for her infertility (30:1); so, in her infinite wisdom, Rachel told Read More

Moniz: We’ve Reached A Milestone

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz

By Secretary ERNEST MONIZ
Department of Energy

After years of negotiation and months of preparation, we’ve reached a milestone.

Today, we are officially implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a historic agreement to ensure that Iran’s nuclear program is exclusively peaceful in nature. Before this agreement, Iran’s breakout time — or the time it would take for Iran to gather enough fissile material to build a weapon — was just two to three months. Today, because of the Iran deal, it would take them 12 months Read More

Letter To The Letter: A Vote ‘FOR’ HB33

By DEBBIE SMITH
Los Alamos

As a resident and homeowner, my property value is dependent on the quality of the schools. I support the HB33 Referendum AND open enrollment.

My vote “FOR” means that I make a major contribution to school quality for less than $1 per day. I ensure that my community has access to well-maintained school facilities for concerts, performances, meetings, and, activities.

I provide our children with updated technology, musical instruments, sports equipment, and activity buses. I make sure today’s students have the quality resources my own children had at LAPS.
