New Mexico Has Lowest Rate Of Workers With Paid Sick Leave In Nation

VFC News:

ALBUQUERQUE — Nearly 50 percent of workers in New Mexico do not receive paid sick leave benefits at their jobs.

This means that these workers cannot stay home or see a doctor when they or a family member are ill without losing wages. This is just one of the many reasons that poverty is so persistent in New Mexico. That’s among the conclusions of the report “Valuing Families at Work: The Case for Paid Sick Leave” being released today by New Mexico Voices for Children.

“No parent should ever have to make the terrible choice between paying their bills and caring for a sick child,

Letter To The Editor: Follow-Up On County Recreation Needs & Economic Development

By FRAN BERTING
Former Los Alamos County Councilor

The analysis by staff and Councilor (Susan) O’Leary of where our CIP money has been spent, as shown in the Los Alamos Daily Post of Thursday, Feb. 25, is indeed eye-opening and very valuable as we proceed to allocate our available resources in the current CIP discussion.

Unfortunately, this analysis may reinforce some of the complaints I have heard repeatedly: “The Government is spending all this money on luxurious digs for itself and on roads, at the expense of citizens’ quality of life needs!”

Remember, one of the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Will CIP Proposals Actually Produce Projected Benefits?

By EDWARD BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

The presentations made at the last CIP public forum held by County Council could be categorized as either “business” focused or “recreational/quality of life” focused.

Comments at both the forum and in articles in the Feb. 28 edition of the LA Monitor state that the business-focused proposals are much more likely to produce a return-on-investment and be more valuable to the community. However, I would like to point out that much of the value associated with these proposals is based on the assumption that these newly developed parcels of land, including the Read More
