Obituary: Harold B. Davis Aug. 20, 2016
HAROLD B. DAVIS Aug. 20, 2016
Harold B. Davis, age 86, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2016.
Harold was born a few weeks before the start of the great depression. It is said that people who grew up in these times came from “Hearty Stock” and he was no exception. Harold was a generous and loving father, husband and friend but he was also “Tough as Nails” with a “Soft Marshmallow Center”. As strong and determined as he was, Harold succumbed to a sudden illness and passed away in a very short time, which was a shock to all who knew and loved him.

Letter To The Editor: Black Bear Safety … The Bear Facts
Fr. Glenn Jones wishes that “…someone catches and transports these bears hanging around town…” (letter). I sympathize with Fr. Jones in looking after the safety of his flock. The problem is that Los Alamos is a rural, mountainous town and is naturally black bear habitat. Removing a bear or three will not remove the fact that we share our county with wildlife, bears and other large animals included.
Thankfully, black bears are rarely aggressive towards humans. The recent attack in the mountains resulted from Read More

NEA-NM President On PARCC Student Test Results
By BETTY PATTERSON
President NEA-New Mexico
The Public Education Department’s release of Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) scores is a positive sign. However, the continued use of these scores for high stakes decisions is still just as misguided as it ever was. Movement in the right direction is an indication that New Mexico’s educators and students are working hard.
Students are at the heart of all we do at NEA-New Mexico, so we appreciate the 30,000 foot view of New Mexico’s education system which the PARCC does provide. The PARCC does not pinpoint Read More

Los Alamos
The unsigned letter from the Los Alamos GOP and Dr. Reilly’s letter about Hillary Clinton are not up to the standards I expect in this community. Just a few comments.
Under the U.S. Supreme Court case Communications Workers of America v. Beck (1988) non-union members in a union shop do not have to pay for union political activity but only that part of the dues that go to representation with the employer. Union members vote on what political activity their union will become involved with through their own representatives Read More

LAPS News:
Students and parents in the Los Alamos Public Schools will be receiving PARCC Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) reports by Friday Sept. 2.
Based upon feedback, this year’s student report has been improved for clarity. Several key elements of the score report have been updated into visual representations tobetter show results. These changes were developed because parents want to know how their child is doing, and where they need help. The LAPS goal is for continuous improvement in communications.
