Letter To The Editor: Abolishment Of Sheriff’s Office

For the past several weeks I have read in the Los Alamos Daily the volley of pro and cons regarding the Office of the Los Alamos County Sheriff, and if it should be abolished. For whatever it is worth, I wish to add my sentiments to this back and forth debate that seems to have lost its compass along the way.
 
I moved to Los Alamos Aug. 15, 1943 at the age of 6 and was the first male student in the Los Alamos School System to go from the first grade through the twelfth.
 
Along that journey I learned a great deal about Los Alamos, a community I deeply love and respect.

Mesa Potrero Prescribed Burn Planned On Coyote Ranger District

SANTA FE  Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest are planning to conduct the previously announced Mesa Potrero pile burn on the Coyote Ranger District this week if conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, are favorable. 
 
Ignitions on the 470-acre fire, located 7 miles northwest of Coyote, could begin today, Oct. 19, and conclude Friday, Oct. 21. Crews expect to burn small blocks of 100 acres per day.

IRS Announces 2017 Tax Counseling For Elderly And Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Grants

IRS News:
 
PHOENIX  The Internal Revenue Service recently awarded over $21.5 million in Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) grants to organizations that provide free federal tax return preparation.
 
This year, the IRS awarded grants to 25 TCE and 246 VITA applicants. The TCE grants cover one year and the VITA grants cover two years. The IRS received 330 applications requesting $54.6 million.
 
The TCE program, established in 1978, provides tax counseling and return preparation nationwide to people who are 60 or older.
