Like many parents, I believe that raising kind, honest, empathetic, and civic-minded kids is the most important thing I will ever do, and raising kids who believe that everyone—regardless of gender, color or ability—should have respect and opportunity is a very big part

Now, who could possibly be opposed to “civility” in public discourse? Well, it depends on how it is defined, who defines it, and most importantly, how it is implemented.

The simple fact of the matter is this: “civility” Read More

Guest Column: Legislature Must Follow New Mexico Tradition Of Taking Care Of Families

By ADRIANN BARBOA
Field Director, Strong Families New Mexico

In New Mexico, we take care of each other. It’s just our way. For generations, my family has made it through tough times by supporting each other.

My Grandpa Barboa was a cattle rancher in Albuquerque’s South Valley. He used to tell me stories about the times when they would have a matanza so the community could get through a tough winter or poor summer harvest. I always love when we have our family matanzas. It is a time when we come together and celebrate each other. What my grandpa explained was something even more: a matanza is way for everyone Read More

Daily Postcard: A cinnamon teal dropped into town for a swim Sunday in Ashley Pond. One theory is that strong winds blew the small dabbling duck off course. Letter To The Editor: About International Women’s Day At Ashley Pond Wednesday

By DOUG REILLY
Los Alamos

International Women’s Day is celebrated much more around the world than here in the USA. When I as working at the IAEA in Vienna, my closest colleague was Russian. I learned that at the Russian Embassy this was the biggest celebration of the year. The men dressed in their best suits and the women in their best dresses. There was a feast for everyone and, of course, many toasts.

Another thing I learned in Russia, Kazakhstan, and other countries in the FSU is that at any gathering THE THIRD TOAST IS TO THE WOMEN, even if no women are present.

It would be nice if the USA Read More

Los Alamos Stands With Jewish Communities Across America With Candlelight Vigil Monday Evening

COMMUNITY News:

Just since the beginning of this year, 77 Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) — nearly half of all JCCs in the United States — have received bomb threats, as have eight Jewish schools. Jewish cemeteries in St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Rochester, New York have been vandalized. And a bullet was fired into the window of a (thankfully, empty) synagogue classroom in Evansville, Ind.

This surge of anti-semitic acts has left many American Jews, including members of the Los Alamos Jewish community, feeling new anxieties about their own safety and the safety of their communal institutions. Read More

SANTA FE — Sen. Jeff Steinborn passed bipartisan legislation through the Senate Judiciary Committee Saturday to end the practice of coyote killing contests in New Mexico.

“Today New Mexico is one step closer to banning inhumane coyote killing contests. This blood sport serves no purpose in the management of coyotes other than killing for the sake of killing. It’s time to make these contests a thing of the past,” Sen. Steinborn said.

This bill now goes to the senate floor for final passage and then, if passed, to the House for consideration in that body. Read More

Medicine is a broad category applicable to humans and animals inhabiting Earth. In most cases it deals with sustaining life as we know it and has an inherent hierarchy that has humans at the top. Accordingly, this list item is primarily concerned with medicine for humanity, noting that animals have a major role in the human existence.
