“Our Woman in Havana” is the title of a talk by former Ambassador Vicki Huddleston slated for 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 at Mesa Public Library.

Sponsored by the AAUW of Los Alamos, the talk is based on her years “as one of America’s top Cuba hands”. She will address events such as the Elian Gonzalez custody saga and the post-9/11 decision to use Guantanamo as a prison for terror suspects.

PHOENIX — The Internal Revenue Service has announced the release of its IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) annual report, reflecting the significant accomplishments and criminal enforcement actions taken in fiscal year 2016.

IRS CI initiated 3,395 cases in FY 2016 that focused on tax-related identity theft, money laundering, public corruption, cybercrime and terrorist financing.

In recognition of Spring Break, the North Central Regional Transit District RTD 255 Mountain Trail bus to Ski Santa Fe will be operating on its weekend/holiday schedule each day throughout the Spring Break period from Monday, March 6 through Friday, March 17.

The weekend/holiday schedule provides seven roundtrips per day to Ski Santa Fe, rather than the normal weekday schedule that provides three roundtrips per day.

Patricia Ann Heeney Reich (Pat) was born December 10, 1936 in South Haven, KS to David Geeslin Heeney and Mary Ellen Burger. She lived a full life of spunk and sass and peacefully passed February 27, 2017 in Albuquerque, NM where she has resided since December 2014.

International Women’s Day is celebrated much more around the world than here in the USA. When I as working at the IAEA in Vienna, my closest colleague was Russian. I learned that at the Russian Embassy this was the biggest celebration of the year. The men dressed in their best suits and the women in their best dresses. There was a feast for everyone and, of course, many toasts.

Another thing I learned in Russia, Kazakhstan, and other countries in the FSU is that at any gathering THE THIRD TOAST IS TO THE WOMEN, even if no women are present.

Just since the beginning of this year, 77 Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) — nearly half of all JCCs in the United States — have received bomb threats, as have eight Jewish schools. Jewish cemeteries in St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Rochester, New York have been vandalized. And a bullet was fired into the window of a (thankfully, empty) synagogue classroom in Evansville, Ind.

This surge of anti-semitic acts has left many American Jews, including members of the Los Alamos Jewish community, feeling new anxieties about their own safety and the safety of their communal institutions. Read More

Coyote Killing Contests Bill Passes Key Committee

SANTA FE — Sen. Jeff Steinborn passed bipartisan legislation through the Senate Judiciary Committee Saturday to end the practice of coyote killing contests in New Mexico.

“Today New Mexico is one step closer to banning inhumane coyote killing contests. This blood sport serves no purpose in the management of coyotes other than killing for the sake of killing. It’s time to make these contests a thing of the past,” Sen. Steinborn said.

This bill now goes to the senate floor for final passage and then, if passed, to the House for consideration in that body. Read More
