SPORTS News:

More than 300 runners participated in Saturday’s Valles Caldera Runs.

The runs included 10k, half-marathon and marathon distance races that started and ended at the Banco Bonita staging area on the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Runners were treated to a perfect day for the races, with cool weather and little wind.

Michael Ehrmantraut and Jacob Waltz, both of Santa Fe, took first and a close second in the marathon, both running just over 3:18. David Coblentz of Los Alamos followed in third. In the women’s marathon, Whitney Spivey won in a time of 4:20. Sarah Thien of Los Alamos took second and Tiffin Zellers of Dixon finished third.

In the 10k race, Erica Baron of Los Alamos took the overall title in a time of 44:25. Kimberly Pulliam of Los Alamos was second woman, and Tania Sanchez of Espanola was third. David Miranda of Santa Fe was the first male finisher in 48:32, with Justin Bobb and William Rice, both from Los Alamos, finishing second and third.

The half marathon race had many runners going off course due to bad course marking 8 miles into the run. Some runners ran the correct distance, while others completed a shorter version. As a result, it has not been possible to determine winners for the half marathon race.
