Letter To The Editor: Sharon Stover Is A Community All-Star!

By DENNIS H. GILL
Los Alamos

I have had the pleasure of serving with Sharon Stover in our local Kiwanis club for many years. Sharon energizes every group she is in, and she has been a tremendous asset to our club.

Sharon has been an integral part of all Kiwanis activities. When Sharon became chair of our scholarship committee, she immediately began to improve and streamline our practices. She moved us to a paperless process that helped save time and trees. Sharon is also the person who coordinates interview schedules, notifies scholarship recipients, and creates the biography sheets

Letter To The Editor: You Can’t Drown New Mexico’s Bureaucracy In A Bathtub

By PAUL J. GESSING
Los Alamos

New Mexico’s Legislative Finance Committee recently issued a report that, to the casual observer, might indicate that the state bureaucracy in the Land of Enchantment has been “cut to the bone” due to recent budget issues.

It may be true as the LFC says that the ranks of state employees have shrunk to the lowest level in almost a decade. What is definitely true is that more cuts are ahead due to the dire budget situation and the weak rebound in oil and gas prices. According to the LFC report, the number of state employees

Letter To The Editor: Stover Lowered Taxes And Advanced Clean Energy

By ROBERT GIBSON
Former Los Alamos County Councilor

An intense political advertising campaign totally misrepresents elements of Sharon Stover’s public service record. I’d like to set the record straight on two issues that occurred while I was on the County Council with Sharon.

First, Sharon voted for the biggest tax DECREASE in County history, exactly the opposite of what the ads claim. The “biggest increase” referencedwas proposed by the School Board and approved by voters in 2009 to start the long-delayed renovation and remodeling of our public schools. Council played no role in deciding Read More

Formerly of Los Alamos

My friend Sadie Sue lives in our retirement center, built (apparently with blind faith) between two forks of the infamous San Andreas Fault in California. In the nearby Open Space Reserve, a hiking trail parallels the fault, which is a lovely ravine filled with huge, unsuspecting liveoak trees, a large duck pond, and colorful poison oak.

Sadie Sue is a Cuban Havanese dog. Her white wavy hair lies neatly all over a trim ten-pound body. She gets lots of exercise while running a quick pace to keep up with Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘The Accountant’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“The Accountant” stars Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, an autistic guy who happens to be a math savant. He works as a very private accountant for some of the world’s most notorious characters, un-cooking their books.

Now he’s laying low, has his own CPA firm and is helping people, like one farm couple trying to figure out their tax liability. And, oh, by the way, he is a sharpshooter and can whip any bad dude in seconds with his bare hands.

Christian takes on a supersize accounting mess with a corporation run by a brother and sister team (John Lithgow and Jean Smart). Read More

Smart Design With Suzette: What’s Trending In Baths

In renovating my master bathroom, I’ve been looking into the latest trends and weighing the old with the new. One thing is for sure, linear drains are hot – here is why.

Previously, shower floors were fairly predictable – a round drain, centered, underfoot and highly visible. That’s changed over the past few years as sleek linear drains have quickly caught the attention of designers and homeowners thanks to their modern, streamlined appearance and installation flexibility. President Barack Obama

POLITICAL News:

Last week New Mexico House Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard (D-Los Alamos) learned she had received an extremely rare endorsement. Breaking normal precedent, President Barack Obama decided to lend his support to targeted swing State House races and selected Garcia Richard, an up-and-coming leader in the New Mexico Legislature.

“This is a unique honor to be endorsed by our President,” Garcia Richard said. “I’ve worked hard to bridge the divide between state and federal issues and support our local contractors
