Cinema Cindy Reviews: Baby Driver

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“Baby Driver” was released on June 28th and has been getting some great reviews ever since. The title may distract from the theme, but think of Paul Simon’s famous tune of the same name and you get the picture.

This is a combination heist flick and hot pursuit action film, directed by Edgar Wright. The soundtrack is a marvelous compilation of popular/rock mood and motivational tunes. The best thing about this film is the way it was edited so that the beat of Baby’s tunes punctuates and choreographs the action. The worst thing about the film is the total disregard of

Fr. Glenn: The Curious Mind

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Had a minor illness last week, and the ol’ brain started wondering: “Hmmm. How does the immune system fix this? Think I’ll look it up.” Or you might see some device and think: “Huh. I wonder how that works.” And then off to the Internet or to the library or to the toolbox you go … seeking explanation.

Intellectual curiosity—something not lacking in THIS town. Perhaps we with science and engineering backgrounds have this propensity more than most. “Wait! YOU have a science background?!” Yup; B.S. in engineering from UT Austin; Read More

By that concerned citizen
Los Alamos

Mr. Pearce, we know in which direction you will be taking New Mexico. As a member of the Freedom Caucus you stood for a Republican Party that wants to push all governmental responsibility to the states while reducing their funding. With politicians like you, New Mexico will have the choice between higher state taxes or less services for New Mexicans.

On Health Care: You voted for the first version of the new healthcare bill – and as part of the Freedom Caucus were among a group of congressmen that wanted it to be even worse. With politicians like you, New Mexico will Read More

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
. —Pink Floyd “Time”

I love this lyric. It reminds me that I cannot pinpoint the moment when I realized that much of time had passed me by. I remember, when I was a child, that becoming a teenager seemed so far off. I remember, as a teen, thinking that 18 and 21 were so far off. I remember, being a young adult, and thinking

Letter To The Editor: Cautions About Hemp/Cannabis

By DENNIS LITTLE
Los Alamos

Saying it’s legal (hemp) cannabis is at least misleading and may end up getting someone fired and/or arrested (link). It is legal by New Mexico law but is still a federal crime and the current administration has made it clear they will go after users/sellers even if the state says it’s OK with it.

LANL also has a no-tolerance policy for drugs, so first offense can lead to immediate termination. While the article says that it’s unlikely to show up in testing, they also cover themselves by saying they don’t guarantee it and you can be sure that LANL won’t take an excuse of “they Read More
