Letter to the Editor: Experience Joy Of Giving

By PAT and ANN SORAN
Campaign Co-Chairs
United Way of Northern New Mexico

Los Alamos is a unique, wonderful community with good schools, favorable climate and beautiful scenery. However, there are those in our community who need some aid in order to enjoy these gifts.

Fortunately, there are resources available to facilitate these needs, but they likewise need funding to accomplish their missions. Both of us have been regular contributors to the United Way for several decades. We have watched our donations used wisely to ‘give a hand’ to those who, for whatever reason, can use a boost. Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos – Vote Exponentially Against Charter Amendment 2

By R. Wayne Hardie
Los Alamos

If anybody is undecided about whether or not to vote against Charter Amendment 2, the recent County Council action to approve an additional $225,000 (on top of the $55,000 already spent) for the new brand (“Los Alamos: Live Exponentially”) should help you make up your mind.

You might think that the LANS GRT windfall is enough revenue for our big-spending Council, but you would be wrong. And if this ill-conceived amendment passes, the Council will be able to divert utility funds for more wasteful projects.

Letter to the Editor: Try A Dog Collar

By Dog Owner With A Suggestion

I am also regularly awakened throughout the night and early morning hours by barking dogs.

I once contacted LAPD to report a neighbor dog’s nighttime incessant barking and was told to resolve the issue with the neighbor. I wasn’t comfortable doing that; and I concluded it wouldn’t have made a difference anyway because there are barky dogs throughout the neighborhood – not just next door on my street. The sound of barking dogs can be magnified by and reverberate off the structures and canyons nearby, making it nearly impossible to pinpoint which houses harbor the nuisance Read More

Letter to the Editor: Thanks For Help After I Ditched My Motorcycle Involuntarily

By COENE SCHMAUN
Los Alamos

On Monday, Oct. 6, I ended up ditching my motorcycle involuntarily, due to a flat tire. I wish to thank several motorists; in particular, two gentlemen, who stopped and stayed until the emergency personal had arrived.

Fortunately for me, my injuries could have been much worse; I never lost consciousness, and my cell phone even worked, despite being drug through the dirt. So, I was able to call for assistance; however, the two men stopped, got my bike up, and made sure I wasn’t more seriously hurt.

In the confusion of LAPD, LAFD arriving, even though I did ask their Read More

Letter to the Editor: With Dog Ownership, Comes Responsibility

By KHALIL SPENCER
Los Alamos

Its unfortunate when citizens have to petition the government for a redress of grievances as simple as asking a neighbor to control their dog, but civilization in Los Alamos seems to have come to that.

In our case, we have few problems with incessant barking, but I have, on occasion, walked to the street to get the morning paper and barely avoided a “soft landing” on something left on the sidewalk by a neighbor walking his or her dog.

It should go without saying that good citizenship means cleaning up after your dog when it drops a reminder of its presence in a heavily used Read More

Letter to the Editor: DPU/BPU Consistently Honest

By GIL MIRANDA
Los Alamos

In the 42 years that I have lived in Los Alamos County, the only department and body that have always been consistently above board, open and honest with the citizens of Los Alamos are the Utilities Department and the Utilities Board.

That’s a lot more than I can say for any of the County Councils or their spokesmen.

Letter to the Editor: The Utilities Issue

By ANTHONY A. AMSDEN
Los Alamos

With all the viewpoints pro and con regarding the utilities issue, it appears to me that John Arrowsmith, in his Oct. 9 letter to the Los Alamos Daily Post, zeroes in on the basic issue concerning the proposed change to Article 5 of the County charter: how much autonomy should the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) have. Right now it is a semi-independent entity. The proposed change to the charter could adversely affect its operation. Other former heads of the DPU concur.

Mr. Arrowsmith is one of the sharpest people Los Alamos County has ever been fortunate enough Read More
