Letter to the Editor: Where Is Our Corporate Memory?

By HEDY DUNN
WHITE ROCK

Now that “Live Exponentially” has died, perhaps it might be a good time to remind the Council and community that at one time we (perhaps it was the Chamber of Commerce) had a perfectly apt “tag-line” that described Los Alamos as “A Unique Blend of Science and Scenery.”

Why do we have to keep searching and paying for yet another slogan? Where is our corporate memory?

Letter to the Editor: Best Letter Yet

By ANNE FO
Los Alamos

I was so taken with the letter from Reid Priedhorsky regarding Los Alamos open space. He said it perfectly and made me think about a branding possibility.

I treasure our cosmopolitan population in “an extraordinary natural setting”.

This Week at the Reel Deal

Column By JIM O’DONNELL
Reel Deal Theater

This Friday we are opening The Theory of Everything and Exodus. Penguins of Madagascar, and Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 1 will hold for another week. Birdman and Horrible Bosses 2 will end this Thursday.

I saw Birdman last night and it probably is in my top three favorite films so far this year. This film is one you want to see on the big screen as it is set within the vestiges of the rambling old St. James Theater (est. 1927) in New York City which in its youth premiered the likes of Oklahoma, The King and I, and Hello Dolly. It really sets the stage Read More

Food on the Hill: Muhammara Sauce

Food on the Hill
By FELICIA ORTH

The unmistakable influence of the Arab world in New Mexico came as a surprise to me when I was preparing a meal for a special Earth Day event a few years ago—a meal based on the fruits and vegetables in the gardens of “New Spain.”

Ultimately, it was the fragrant and concentrated flavors of orange blossom essence, rosewater, rose petal syrup and pomegranate molasses in some of the Spanish recipes I found that revealed the depth of the Arabic contributions to that cuisine.

A book published this fall by the late Juan Estevan Arellano, “Enduring Acequias—Wisdom

Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos Should Be Visited By The World – Not Shrouded In Secrecy

By MIKE WHEELER
Los Alamos

It’s always surprising to me the many experts who come out against initiatives of the council never having bothered to even make a cursory review of the issue.

The branding effort by the council is another way that the rest of the world can be encouraged to visit our community. The proposed brand was not developed to appease the local population but to give the world a more inviting phrase that will encourage visitors rather than turning them away as does the “atomic city” brand. I personally like the atomic city; however, I am not running a business dependent Read More

Letter to the Editor: Forty-One Aspen Students Write expressions Of Thanks To Los Alamos!

By SAVANNAH
Aspen Sixth Grade

Dear Los Alamos,

This new building that Los Alamos has built is beautiful!

One thing that surprised me about the new building was the architecture. The architecture around the whole school is just amazing and beautiful. Another thing that surprised me was the media center. The media center has a fireplace and couches so you can read quietly.

One thing that was eye-catching in the building was the Aspen trees all over the school. The trees in the windows of the media center are incredible! Another thing that was eye-catching was the dining hall. It is very neat and beautiful. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Support Open Space Plan

By REID PRIEDHORSKY
Los Alamos

I’m one of those kids who came back. I had many choices, but my family and I chose Los Alamos. Why? What makes Los Alamos special?

My friends who live elsewhere are not impressed by my lab job. Nor are they impressed by the slower small-town pace of life, the great schools, the friendly people, or the opportunity to really make a difference in public service. These types of things are big pluses, but they are available in lots of places.

However, they are impressed by the fact that I can walk out my back gate into a forested canyon system on public land. If that’s iced
