Gray Matters: Vote No On School Bond Issue

By LARRY JOHNSON
Los Alamos

The purpose of this column is to urge you to vote no on the school bond issue. There are at least three good reasons to vote no.

First, we voted for a large tax increase before the new high school was built, followed by a new middle school and a new elementary school. We were assured by the school board at that time they would need no further bonds for capital expenses. The present vote is for further capital spending. A vote no will reduce our taxes and partially compensate for the previous large increase.

The second reason to vote no is because the school

Letter To The Editor: Gun Violence? We Are Fighting The Wrong War

By KHALIL J. SPENCER
Los Alamos

We are entering another legislative session and at least one gun control bill will be introduced. Such bills will treat the symptoms, gun violence, rather than the diseases. Gun violence is driven by deeper issues, namely our failed wars on drugs and poverty and our addiction to a culture of violence.

As many analysts have told us (e.g., a recent NPR piece) gun control laws are oversold. For example, a tiny fraction of guns traced to crime are purchased at gun shows. Most are trafficked through straw purchases, obtained from acquaintances, or stolen. Often, (e.g., Read More

Letter To The Editor: History…

By GERALD M. ANTOS
 Los Alamos

Dear Mr. Reilly (letter):

“Those that forget history are condemned to repeat it.”

  • After disarming the Soviet population, Joseph Stalin murdered 20+ million people;
  • After disarming the Chinese population, Mao Tse Tung murdered 40+ million people;
  • After disarming the German population, Adolf Hitler murdered 14+ million people most of them Jews and Christians; and
  • Barack Obama, a proven liar has an agenda to disarm the U.S. population. He is a Muslim.

And the list continues and is long showing what tyrannical leaders have done to the human race in order Read More

Letter to the Editor: No-brainers And The Other No-brainers

By KEI DAVIS
Los Alamos

A common use of the term “no-brainer” is to imply that the “right” decision is so obvious as to not require engagement of the brain.

An alternative interpretation, which may be the more correct in some of the recent dialogue in the LADP (letter), implies the making of a facile choice without engagement of the brain, e.g., investing in a transparent pyramid scheme or trying to get rich at a casino.

Google “define facile”, apparently from vocabdictionary.com:

Facile

1. (especially of a theory or argument) appearing neat and comprehensive only by ignoring the true complexities Read More

Letter To The Editor: ‘Guns – Nation’s Worst Epidemic’ Response

By LARRY FREESTONE
Los Alamos

In reference to Mr. Doug Reilly’s letter, I would like to offer a few comments.

1. Every dictionary I examined (home and online) refers to “Epidemic” as a disease. A disease usually refers to a particular abnormal condition, a disorder of a structure or function, which affects part or all of an organism.A gun is not a disease that would be identified by the CDCor WHO as an epidemic.

2. None of the 174 other countries that have gun rates below the U.S. are places that I would want to live.I cherish the rights we have that are found nowhere else on this planet. I will take this Read More

Food On The Hill: Chicken And Rice Soup

Chicken and Rice Soup. Photo by Felicia Orth

I make a lot of soup throughout the year, including gazpacho, minestrone, Hungarian mushroom, curried squash, and chile/chili stew, but this is my favorite. The recipe originally came from the Silver Palate “Good Times” cookbook, a strong early influence full of joyful entertaining tips and recipes organized by holiday and season. I’ve adapted it in several respects to reduce the fat and increase the veggies, among other things.

When I tell friends that it is a miraculously healing soup, I am only half-kidding: chicken Read More

Healthy lifestyle habits are your best defense against heart disease, but changing habits isn’t easy.
