Online Education Program Teaches Kindness To Animals

APNM News:

ALBUQUERQUE — Beginning in the 2021-2022 school year, Animal Protection New Mexico’s humane education curricula will be available at no cost online.

Before COVID, The Animal Connection and The Animal Connection Jr. were offered live in the classroom. The Animal Connection also served juvenile detention centers and adult correctional facilities.

In addition to receiving the adult The Animal Connection program, inmates at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Los Lunas lived with and trained shelter dogs to ready them for adoption.

Now, educators across New Mexico will be able to utilize and present these lessons via the online educational platform LearnWorlds.

There are two age-appropriate programs within The Animal Connection, both teaching humane stewardship for animals.

Curriculum geared for grades 3-8 and adaptable for adults, consists of 10 lessons:

  • Introduction
  • Care and Responsibility: Life and Death in the Shelter
  • The Need for Spaying and Neutering
  • Loose Dog and Bite Safety
  • The Link Between Animal Abuse and Human Violence
  • The Consequences of Dog Chaining
  • Blood Sports
  • Careers in Animal Welfare
  • Sherpa’s Farm, featuring a northern New Mexico sanctuary for horses, donkeys, llamas, sheep, goats, and cows

“The Animal Connection lessons enhance the human-animal bond and help improve safety with dogs and other animals,” says Sherry Mangold, APNM Education Outreach Director. “The responsibility and empathy that grows from the lessons about vulnerable animals transfers to concern and respect for the students’ peers, families, and communities.”

The Animal Connection Jr., designed for pre-K-2nd grade students, includes Care and Responsibility, Animal Safety, and Reading to the Dogs, a unique reading lesson with the Southwest Canine Corps of Volunteers therapy dogs.

To access the free curriculum for your classroom, homeschool, or community group, contact Sherry Mangold, sherry@apnm.org. Stand-alone presentations are also available.

APNM would like to extend special thanks to Nusenda Foundation and Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation for supporting the promotion and roll-out of the virtual programs in communities throughout New Mexico, including Albuquerque, Algodones, Bernalillo, Cuba, Placitas, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Wagon Mound, Los Lunas, Las Cruces, Sunland Park, Carlsbad, Loving, Ruidoso, Alamogordo, Tularosa, and others.
