Staff Report

Los Alamos Medical Center gave shoppers a little bit of luck on what is often thought to be the unluckiest day of the year: Friday the 13th.

Friday, the hospital’s lobby shop hosted a Black Friday sale, which featured 20 to 75 percent off sale items. Shop Manager Teri Nixon explained the store is run entirely by the hospital auxiliary and its proceeds benefit the community through scholarships and purchasing books for nurses taking classes. Also, the shop helps support pharmaceutical and medical assistance for under-served populations. She said this is the first time a Black Friday sale was held on Friday, the 13th, but the plan is to hold it annually, whenever the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday. She added the sale was a success, saying the store has had “quite the turnout.”

Nixon explained she purchases most of the store’s inventory during an international market held twice a year in Las Vegas, Nev. She said she also buys a few things from online vendors.

The hospital’s shop is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the first floor of the hospital.

Nixon said the hospital auxiliary has operated for 65 years and has 35 members. She said they are always looking for new members. Interested individuals can pick up an application at the shop or call 505.662.2555.
