Thursday evening the Hilltoppers’ girls’ soccer team bounced back from Tuesday’s tough loss to St. Pius with workmanlike two-nil win over the visiting St. Michael’s Horsemen. The first Topper goal came early, at the 4th minute. Senior Abby Schmalz scored off an assist from midfielder Alix Haily. The Topper kept shooting for the rest of the half. But Horsemen goalie Jose Fernandez blocked 6 Topper shots. The score at halftime remained one-nil.
The Toppers got an insurance goal at the 52nd minute when Sophomore Katie Hopkins scored with a powerful left-footed shot. At this point Hilltopper coach Gary Ahlers began substituting liberally getting the younger players into the game. To their credit the Horsemen never gave up and mounted several strong attacks forcing Topper goal, Anna Lemke, to make 5 saves. With 10 minutes remaining Coach Ahlers went back to his starters and, led by center defender Kayla Parker, they preserved the victory.
Next action for the Toppers varsity is this Saturday, Sept. 3 at 11 a.m. when they face the Belen Eagles.
In Thursday’s junior varsity game the Topper girls defeated the Horsemen 8-0. Peyton Hobbs started the scoring with her first goal in the 8th minute. Next Anna Matuszak got her first goal in the 11th minute off an assist from Hobbs. A hustling Isabella Hodges got the next goal in the 27th minute. The Topper got three quick goals before halftime. With assists from Hannah Gram and Aliya Richins, Kaya Krantz made the score 4-0 in the 37th minute. Amy Littleton got the fifth goal in the 38th minute and Peyton Hobbs got her second goal in the 39th minute with an assist from Amy Littleton making the score 6-nill at half.
Anna Matuszak got her second goal in the 58th minute. Marie Lee got the Toppers final goal in the 63rd minute making the score 8-nil. Topper goalie Annika Fox never had to make any saves. On the other hand the Horseman goalie, Ali Pittard, had to make 13 saves!
