VIRGINIA (GINNY) LORRAINE RAND May 30, 1931 – May 30, 2016
Virginia (Ginny) Lorraine Rand died peacefully on her 85th birthday May 30, 2016. She was born in Spokane, Washington on May 30, 1931 to Ernest and Frieda Althouse, immigrants from Switzerland.
Ginny graduated from Holy Names College in 1952 with an education degree. She married John Rand in 1953 and had 6 children before moving to Los Alamos in 1966.
Ginny raised her 5 boys and 1 girl as she worked as a substitute teacher for more than 20 years in the Los Alamos Public School system. As her children graduated from high school she pursued a library science degree and worked at Mesa Public Library for 30 years. She immensely enjoyed her time as a reference librarian that allowed her to meet many varied and interesting people. Her family enjoyed her stories of “what happened at work”. Even after retirement she spent many hours volunteering for the Senior Center and Mesa Public Library.
Ginny had many friends that she met pursing her various extracurricular hobbies. She was a dedicated hiker, devoted gardener, persistent swimmer, voracious reader, precise seamstress, avid tennis player, and pie-maker extraordinaire. Ginny and John also enjoyed traveling and had many exciting adventures exploring different regions of the world.
Ginny is survived by her husband of 63 years, John; sister Gloria Furgason (Robert); children John (Brenda), Mark (Carolyn), Gregory (Christine), Amy Gallegos (Don), Dan (Remi), and Joseph (Carminda). She loved and cherished all her family, 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren (with 2 more on the way).
Friends are invited for a celebration of Ginny’s special life on June 25, 2016 at East Park from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please join the family remembering Ginny with an informal picnic at the park she loved and frequented. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Friends of Los Alamos County Library System (FLACL.org), Los Alamos Senior Center (losalamossenior.com or LARSO 1101 Bathtub Row, Los Alamos, NM 87544) , or the Alzheimer Association.
