SEVERO GONZALES July 2, 1929 – Jan. 31, 2023

Severo “Slim” Gonzales, 93, Española, passed away on January 31, 2023, of natural causes.

He was born in Española, NM on July 2, 1929. The Son of Bences Gonzales and Ernestina Romero Gonzales. He is preceded by: Donald (son), Victor and Raymond (Brothers), and Lauren Noell (sister).

Severo is survived by his Wife of 67 years, Aurora, two Sons, Glenn (Espanola) and David (Boston MA), Sisters, Stephanie Cruz (Boulder CO), Theresa McClendon (Newton, KS). Grandchildren, Andrea and Kristen (Loveland, CO), Elias, Elena and Bryan (Espanola) and Amanda (Santa Fe).

He graduated from Los Alamos High School, Class of 1947. Throughout high school he excelled in multiple sports including basketball, baseball, and football. Post high school he attended the El Rito Normal School, studying various trades. In his early 20’s, he joined the Air Force, serving as a Sergeant with great pride.

He had fond memories of being stationed in Morocco and touring various countries during his service. It was when he returned home to Los Alamos he met Aurora at the Post Office, where she was working, asked her on a date and the rest is history.

Severo was an explorer of nature and geography, an appreciation he shared with his father and grandfather. He was a devoted husband and father, he enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, and hunting with his three sons, and his father in earlier years. He took care of both parents in later years. His grandchildren are a symbol of his instilled values of respect, moral principles, and ethical behavior.

Severo was a member of La Iglesia de Santa Cruz and an hermano with La Confradia de La Santisima Trinidad. He loved, gardening, long drives, telling stories of his tour of duty, and the Los Alamos Ranch School, which was instrumental in his family’s upbringing. Other hobbies included wood carving, reading and being with friends and family.

A rosary will take place on Friday February 24, 2023, at 10:00 am at Santa Cruz de la Canada with a mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 am. A burial will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later date.

Pallbearers: Bryan and Elias Gonzales, Don Hall, Paul Cruz, John Overheim, and Ralph Sanchez.

Honorary: Andrea Gonzales, Amanda Gonzales, Elena Gonzales, and Kristen Overheim.
