MAXINE STEPHENSON KELSO April 30, 1941 – June 20, 2021
Maxine Stephenson Kelso, 80, passed away on June 20, 2021, at home in Clovis, NM.
Maxine was born on April 30, 1941, in Aline, OK to Orville Gore Stephenson and Lucille Settle Stephenson.
Maxine graduated from Groom High School in 1959 then attended West Texas State University in Canyon, TX where she met Ferman Kelso. They were married June 1, 1962, in Groom, TX.
After graduation from WTSU, Ferman commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the US Army. After training they were assigned to White Sands Missile Range, NM where Maxine worked as a second grade teacher. After completion of Ferman’s service commitment, they moved to Alamogordo, NM for work at Holloman Air Force Base.
They were blessed with their son, Kelly on June 3, 1968. In 1970 they moved to Los Alamos, NM to advance Ferman’s career. They were blessed with their daughter, Nicole in 1971. Once the children reached school age, Maxine returned to the work force as a teachers’ aide at Pinon Elementary School. After several years in the school system, she started working for Los Alamos National Laboratory where she worked as a secretary, a purchasing agent, and an office manager until she retired in 1996.
In 1997 Maxine and Ferman moved to Clovis, NM to be closer to their aging parents. Over the years, Maxine played in many bridge groups, participated in the Republican Women’s organization and the Grady Extension club, and was active in their church. She was also a perpetual student of beginning golf at Clovis Community College. Maxine loved all children, welcoming all of the neighborhood kids into their home and their driveway playground. She also loved to spoil animals, especially their many dogs, horses, and even a few cats.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, two infant daughters, Joni and Susan, and her brother Steve.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years Ferman, her children Kelly, and Nicky, sisters Carolyn May Shelhamer and Marlys Melton, grandchildren Kassie and Kimberley Kelso, and Kyle and Zachary Van Pelt, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved as her own.
A viewing took place on June 24, 2021 at Muffley Funeral Home, 1430 Thornton St., Clovis. A funeral service was held on June 25, 2021 at Kingswood United Methodist Church, 2600 N Main St., Clovis. Pastor Bill Case officiated. A graveside service was held on June 26, 2021 at Dreamland Cemetery, 26500 US-87, Canyon, TX.
