Obituary: Laura Ann Beckley July 26, 1954 – March 2, 2023

LAURA ANN BECKLEY July 26, 1954 – March 2, 2023

Laura Beckley passed away March 2 at the age of 68.

Laura was born in San Angelo, TX to Philip W. and Vivien R. Beckley. Laura grew up in both New Mexico and in Texas; attending primary and secondary school in Albuquerque, and summers on the Texas Gulf coast. (She had a life-long affinity for both the charms of the New Mexican Southwest and for all things coastal, and a few times over the years she changed her home base accordingly.

When Laura retired from her “work” life, she spent several years living on the coast in Daytona Beach, FL and became a big fan of the Space Coast and all the exciting space activities. She also became an avid sea turtle supporter and spent countless hours monitoring turtle movements. Laura spent her last few years in New Mexico, but she continued to support turtle conservation efforts from afar.)

After high school, Laura enjoyed several “gap months” travelling, and then matriculated at University of New Mexico before taking a job with a large “downtown” law firm in San Antonio. Eventually Laura felt the lure of the Southwest and moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico. She took a job as office manager for the County Administrator’s office, where she stayed until retirement.

During Laura’s tenure there, she was involved in the county’s move to new offices and all the accompanying efforts of getting resettled. Also, Laura worked to transition the county to a new on-line presence for Council meetings, agendas, minutes and so on; and conducted training for new users of the cyber system in various departments throughout county government.

From a young age, Laura was always engaged in craft-y projects and hobbies. She was an accomplished gardener and had beautiful flowers and plants wherever she resided; she was an avid “foodie” and loved entertaining, catering, hosting teas, dinners, picnics, any excuse for friends to gather and share good food.

Laura was also an accomplished seamstress and after her retirement, she started an online artisan home goods business that kept her quite busy creating, designing and producing custom items for buyers from around the country. There were very few skills at which Laura did not excel once she set her hand to something new.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents (Philip and Vivien Beckey), and her brother (Philip Jr.). She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law (Lauren and Erik Moro), 3 grandchildren (Charlotte, Hannah, and Eliana), her sister (Holly), and 2 nephews (Wesley and Ian).

A memorial service to celebrate Laura’s life will be held at a later date, and details will be available on the Porter Loring website.
