Gavin Vaughan March 14, 1931 – Nov. 14, 2014
Gavin Vaughan, of Alvin, Texas, passed away at age 83, on Friday, Nov. 14, 2014. Gavin dedicated his life to serving the Lord and had a great love for all people.
Gavin is survived by: three children – Cullene Hobbs and husband Larry; Gavin Vaughan II and wife Shelby; and Debbe Vaughan; five grandchildren – Kevin Hobbs and wife Tara; Travis Hobbs and wife Shandar; Jena Polly and husband Scott; Cody Jones and wife Lynsey; Chelsae Haines and husband Matt; and five great-grand children – Keller Hobbs, Rylyn Hobbs, Reagan Haines, Kaiden Polly and Kennedy Haines. He is also survived by one brother – Kelly Vaughan of Keller, Texas.
Gavin married Berniece Grimes in 1951. She preceded him in death in 2004. He is also preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.
Gavin, the last of eleven children, was born on a farm outside of Marion, Kentucky on March 14, 1931. His family moved across the river to Evansville, Indiana in the late 1930’s. After graduating from Bosse High School in Evansville, Gavin left home to further his education and prepare for the ministry. He graduated from the University of Corpus Christi, in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1954, and received his Masters in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1964.
Gavin’s love of sports got him an offer to play minor league baseball before he left for college. His love of singing got him involved in the local Ted Mack Amateur Hour contests. His quartet won their local competition. He attended Cincinnati Bible College to continue singing with the quartet. At the age of 17, he hitchhiked his way to Texas to further his education. Through the years, Gavin recorded several solo albums.
Gavin began serving the Lord at the age of 19 at OST Baptist Church in Houston. He served churches in Texas, California, Washington and New Mexico. He served as the Music, Youth and Education Minister to First Baptist, Los Alamos, N.M. (1961-1964); Minister of Education and Youth at Park Memorial Baptist in Houston (1964-1967); Minister of Music, Youth and Education to Richland Baptist Church in Richland Wash. (1967-1971), Minister of Education at Crescent Park Baptist in Odessa Texas (1971-1973), Minister of Education in Cupertino, Calif. (1973-1977) and Pastor of Belvue Baptist Church, Hobbs. N.M. (1977-1995). While attending seminary he served at several other churches in Texas including, Burkburnet, Dallas, Whitesboro and Sinton. He served at First Baptist Cupertino, CA and was interim pastor at Skyview Baptist Church in Alvin, Texas for a short period of time.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28 at Scott Funeral Home. Services will be held at South Park Baptist Church, Alvin, Texas at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given to the Gavin Vaughan Ministerial Scholarship Fund. Gifts can be sent to 1510 S Hill, Alvin, Texas 77511. The fund will be used to provide scholarships for ministerial students furthering their education.
