DARLE HOWAT VOSBURGH Jan. 11, 1930 March 11, 2018

A memorial is planned for June 23 in Belen, New Mexico for Darle Howat Vosburgh, 88, who died March 11th in Los Alamos as a result of multiple health issues.

Darle Howat was born January 11, 1930 in Staten Island, New York to Walter and Agnes Howat. Walter was a chemist and ceramics engineer during World War I and founded a ceramics casting company in Tottenville, at the southern tip of Staten Island.

Darle loved the outdoors and spent her childhood years caring for and riding horses along Staten Island beaches. She was a member of the 1947 Tottenville High School graduating class, then attended Syracuse University where she earned a degree in Education. While there, she met and married her husband, Dean Evert Vosburgh. The couple moved to Columbus, Ohio where they had one son, David. Darle taught school and spent most of her career as a physical education teacher in the Columbus area.

After retiring, the couple moved to Dillon, Colorado where they managed Tiger Run Resort, a luxury RV resort and outdoor activity center near Breckenridge. In the late 1980s they moved to Belen, New Mexico where in addition to enjoying social activities with friends, Darle volunteered with the Albuquerque Zoo to You program and the Valencia Shelter Services helping victims of domestic violence.

Following Dean’s death in 2010, Darle moved to Los Alamos where she led a quiet life, pursuing interests in painting and dog obedience/agility training.

She was often seen around the downtown area and at Ashley Pond in the late mornings walking her dog. She is immortalized as the model for one of the characters featured in the metal statue that stands in front of the Los Alamos Justice Center.

Darle is remembered by her son David Vosburgh and his wife, Linda of Los Alamos; grandchildren Alex Vosburgh, Kelly Hoyt, and Scott Vosburgh; brother-in-law John Vosburgh, sister-in-laws Bobbi and Jeanne Vosburgh; nieces Sue Blackburn and Jodie Sturdevant, and nephews Keith Sennate, and George, Jerry, and Jaret Vosburgh. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, husband, and sister Joyce.
