The super squad soccer matchup between Los Alamos High School and Hope Christian High School started off cold with a few drizzles of rain throughout the game held Sept. 22 at Sullivan Field.

The Toppers struck first in the game with Arthur Steinkamp scoring a wonder goal in under a minute assisted by Jonathan Coons. The Toppers fought hard in the first half capitalizing on defensive opportunities to hold off the Huskies all-out attack keeping it to 1-0 until half time.

In the early part of the second half, the Toppers did not seem to have their usual aggressive plays. In the 55th minute, Hope Christian smashed in a goal to level the game and put stress on the Toppers.

From that point on, the game slowed down with both teams having few chances but still putting in 100 percent to edge one off of the other team. Luckily the Toppers bounced back in the dying minutes of the game when Andreas Runde assisted George Stienkamp.

Runde slotted a beautiful cross from the right hand corner of the box leaving a tap in for Stienkamp in the 78th minute. The Toppers skimmed out with the win and celebrated their last minute win.

“It was a good team win, and a good moral booster for the team,” Runde said.

Like Runde predicted, the team carried their spirits into Friday’s final where they took on Roswell. The game was another nail-biter, with the Toppers taking the win in Penalties 3-1 after a 0-0 regulation time score. It handed them the Louie Cericek Tournament Trophy, which they took home with pride. The game had been pushed backed a month due to poor weather conditions.

Hopefully with a winning season like this, the Toppers can find a way to pull through the state finals this year.
