Northern Associate Degree Nursing student Kendra Gallegos has been awarded the 2018 Nightingale Scholarship by the New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence.

Gallegos, who is completing her freshman year, was one of 20 outstanding nursing students from across the state to receive the $1,000 award to assist them in the pursuit of their nursing degrees.

She was presented with the scholarship check by Northern’s Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Ellen Trabka and Northern’s Interim Associate Degree Nursing Program Director Chris Young.

“I’m humbled, grateful and excited,” Gallegos said of receiving the award. “I’ve been wanting to become a nurse for as long as I can remember because I know that I have the heart and the dedication to care for people in my community.”

Gallegos, who works two part-time jobs in addition to being a full-time student, also expressed relief that the scholarship would allow her to focus more on her studies.
