Northern Holds Heritage Arts Show & Reception

NNMC News:

Northern New Mexico College is holding a Heritage Arts Show to highlight the work of continuing education students on Wednesday, April 26 and Thursday, April 27 at the Nick Salazar Center for the Arts in Española.

The show will be preceded by a reception 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, April 24 where community members can meet Northern’s student artists.

The art show will feature Spanish Colonial Furniture, Fiber Arts, and Retablos/Bultos created as part of Northern’s continuing education courses in heritage arts.

SPANISH COLONIAL FURNITURE
While there is some formal instruction, most of the student’s time is spent working on projects with the instructor as facilitator. The spirit and enthusiasm of the students reflect the attitudes of the instructors, recognized as master craftsmen. It is a program where the hands may do the work, but the drive and inspiration come from the heart.

FIBER ARTS

At Northern’s Fiber Arts classes, students learn the traditional design forms: known as the Saltillo, Rio Grande Traditional, Vallero, and Chimayó to name a few. They come with their own modern senses. Through the course of their training, students develop their skill in weaving, color and design, spinning, and dyeing, keeping the tradition of Rio style weaving alive.

RETABLO/BULTO MAKING

Retablos are famous worldwide for their expressive beauty. Students create their own spin on the retablo with inspiration from the saints. They also learn to paint in the tradition of northern New Mexico with natural pigments, homemade gesso, and pilon varnish.

OPEN RECEPTION

Tuesday, April 24, 4-6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building.

ART SHOW

Wednesday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building.
