NMSP: Barricaded Suspect Arrested On Interstate 25

BERNALILLO COUNTY – At around 6:31 p.m. Saturday, New Mexico State Police Officers conducted a traffic stop on a white Nissan pickup for a traffic violation. The traffic stop was on Tramway near Interstate 25.

 The driver, Orlando Lopez, 56, of Albuquerque refused to exit his vehicle. Lopez armed himself with a knife and barricaded himself inside his vehicle. State Police Crisis Negotiators and Tactical Team were called in to assist, and east and westbound lanes on Tramway and I-25 were closed.

After hours of negotiations, Lopez was arrested and taken into custody. He was transported and booked into the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque.

Lopez was charged with:

  • Driving While Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor or Drugs (4th or Subsequent Offense)
  • Speeding
  • Failure to Yield to Oncoming Traffic
  • Failure to Obey Signs Directing Traffic
