SANTA FE – The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) has announced the launch of the Level Up Reading Challenge, which aims to instill a love for literacy among New Mexico’s students and inspire them to become Superhero Readers, and “Level Up” their reading scores.

Ralph the Reader and Ricky the Roadrunner, the mascots of literacy, are on a thrilling adventure across the enchanting landscapes of New Mexico. Their mission is to visit Model and Support Schools across the state, spreading the message of the Level Up Reading Challenge.

As part of the Level Up Reading Challenge, NMPED encourages students to participate in a 45-minute read-aloud session of the book “This Is New Mexico/Este es Nuevo Mexico”, written by Severo Martinez, Director of the NMPED Literacy and Humanities Bureau. This captivating literary journey not only showcases the rich cultural diversity and history of New Mexico but also encourages young minds to explore the magic of reading.

“The Level Up Reading Challenge is more than just a reading initiative; it’s a call to action for every child in New Mexico to embrace the power of literacy,” Martinez said. “We challenge students to rise to the occasion, change their mindset, and work diligently on their reading and writing skills. We want to shine a spotlight on Superhero Readers and provide exciting incentives to encourage every child to level up their literacy.”

Promoting literacy is of paramount importance for the NMPED. Literacy forms the cornerstone of a child’s educational journey and paves the way for lifelong learning. Ricky the Roadrunner embodies the spirit of positive literacy. Through this challenge, the NMPED aims to inspire every child in New Mexico to elevate their literacy skills and embark on a journey of personal growth and achievement.
