NMDOT Announces Update To State Rail Plan

NMDOT News:

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation recently announced the development of an updated state Rail Plan. The 2018 Rail Plan will describe the current state of New Mexico’s rail system, articulate a strategic vision for the future of the rail system, and identify projects and funding sources to support that vision.

The contract to complete the Rail Plan was awarded in April. The Department anticipates that the development of the Rail Plan will continue for eighteen months, concluding in the fall of 2018.

In order to support the Rail Plan’s development, NMDOT is creating an on-line survey that will soon be accessible through a link on the NMDOT Transit and Rail web page, http://dot.state.nm.us/content/nmdot/en/Transit_Rail.html. The survey will focus on gathering information about railroad issues which are important to New Mexicans.  The Rail Plan will explore these issues, identify potential solutions, and review potential funding sources.

NMDOT encourages anyone with an interest in freight and passenger rail transportation in New Mexico to participate in the on-line survey.  NMDOT Staff will also make presentations to the State’s Municipal Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Regional Transportation Organizations (RTPOs) to solicit input for the Rail Plan.

The previous New Mexico State Rail Plan was completed in 2014 and is available on the NMDOT website.  States must update their state rail plans every four years.  It is recommended that any rail project that seeks Federal funds be identified in the Rail Plan.
