NMAA Foundation Announces Student Scholarships

ALBUQUERQUE  The New Mexico Activities Association is excited to announce the 17 recipients of the 2016-2017 NMAA Foundation Scholarships.
 
The NMAA Foundation will recognize the students receiving these scholarships March 7-11 during the U.S. Bank State Basketball Championships.
 
More than 200 students applied for the scholarships, with nine receiving $1,000, six receiving $1,500 and two receiving $2,500. There were eight different scholarship categories for which students could submit applications.
 
The following list details those students selected:
 
Extraordinary Participation Scholarship, presented by the NMAA Foundation ($2,500 each)
*Given to students excelling in athletics, activities, and academics
  • David Ogden, Rio Rancho
  • Rayce Wagley, Animas
“Compete with Class” Scholarships, presented by the NM National Guard ($1,500 each)
*Given to students that exemplify the ideals of sportsmanship & the Compete with Class initiative
  • Christine Heisey, Hope Christian 
  • James Martin, Onate
  • Livia Hensley, Piedra Vista
  • Rebekah McCarty, Reserve   
Mario Martinez Memorial Scholarship ($1,500 each)
*Given to students excelling in athletics and academics within Class A-3A schools
  • Dayton Harris, Dexter
  • Marisa Luna, Estancia
Dan & Lucille Wood/Gray Gladiator Athletic Scholarship, presented by Subway ($1,000 each)
*Given to students excelling in athletics and academics
  • Taylor Mitchell, Hatch Valley 
  • Cathryn Graham, Tatum
Activities Scholarship, presented by Subway ($1,000 each)
*Given to students excelling in activities and academics
  • Pholopater Faltas, Highland
  • Sara Albanna, Albuquerque
El Richards/Francis Walsh Spirit Scholarship, presented by Varsity Spirit ($1,000 each)
*Given to students excelling in spirit (cheer/dance) and academics
  • Keanna Capener, St. Michael’s
  • Breckan Campbell, Farmington
Swimming & Diving Scholarship, presented by Streamline Swimstore ($1,000 each)
*Given to students excelling in swimming and/or diving and academics
  • Jackson Lent-Koop, Cleveland
  • Claire Meyer-Hagen, Hope Christian
Coach Dick Shelley St. Michael’s HS Basketball Scholarship ($1,000)
*Given to students excelling in basketball and academics
  • Thomas Jenson, La Cueva
The NMAA Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was set up in 2007 to support the many students that participate in high school athletic and activity programs across New Mexico. The funds raised by the Foundation are used for student scholarships and school grants/support.
