New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in June, down from 4.9 in May and up from 4.0 percent in the previous year. The national unemployment rate in June was 4.2 percent, down from 4.3 percent in May and up from 4.1 percent in June 2025.
Total nonagricultural payroll employment grew by 10,600 jobs, or 1.2 percent, between June 2025 and June 2026. The private sector was up 9,300 jobs, or 1.3 percent, while the public sector was down 1,300 jobs, or 0.7 percent. Within the private sector, the private service-providing industries were up 7,100 jobs, or 1.2 percent, while employment in the goods-producing industries was up 2,200 jobs, or 2.0 percent. Five of the nine private industries reported gains compared to employment levels in June 2025.
Within the goods-producing industries, mining and construction was up 2,000 jobs, or 2.5 percent. Within mining and construction, mining was up 1,400 jobs, or 5.6 percent, while construction was up 600 jobs, or 1.1 percent. Manufacturing employment was up 200 jobs, or 0.7 percent. Within manufacturing, durable goods manufacturing was down 200 jobs, or 1.3 percent, and non-durable manufacturing was up 400 jobs, or 3.3 percent.
Within the private service-providing industries, private education and health services reported a gain of 3,800 jobs, or 2.5 percent.
Within the industry, most gains were in private educational services, which was up 2,400 jobs, or 11.9 percent. Health care and social assistance was up 1,400 jobs, or 1.1 percent. Trade, transportation, and utilities employment was up 3,600 jobs, or 2.5 percent. Within this industry, retail trade was up 2,600 jobs, or 2.8 percent; wholesale trade was up 400 jobs, or 1.9 percent; and transportation, warehousing, and utilities was up 600 jobs, or 2.0 percent. Leisure and hospitality was up 3,000 jobs, or 3.0 percent.
Professional and business services was down 1,800 jobs, or 1.5 percent. Miscellaneous other service was down 700 jobs, or 2.4 percent. Information was down 400 jobs, or 4.3 percent. Financial activities was down 400 jobs, or 1.1 percent.
Within the public sector, local government was up 2,000 jobs, or 1.9 percent. Within local government employment, local government excluding education added 1,700 jobs, representing an increase of 3.2 percent. Local government education was up 300 jobs, or 0.6 percent. Employment in state government was up 1,400 jobs, or 2.6 percent. Within state government, the majority of gains were in state government excluding education, which was up 1,100 jobs, or 3.2 percent. State government education was up 300 jobs, or 1.5percent. Federal government was down 2,100 jobs, or 7.2 percent, from its employment level in June 2025.
