STATE News:
SANTA FE – With Father’s Day right around the corner, the New Mexico Tourism Department has compiled a list of trip ideas designed with dads in mind.
The “New Mexico True Detours for Dad” is a roundup of nine “father-friendly” adventures that will be pitched to outlets around the country to inspire summer travel for fathers and families.

“Our state is a mecca for the things that dads love most,” Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Latham said. “From craft beers and burgers to road trips and relaxation, these trip ideas remind us why New Mexico is the best place in the world to spend time with your dad.”
Among the nine suggestions are big time adventures like zip lining and mountain biking, along with memorable excursions like dark sky camping and road tripping on the Enchanted 8.
“Dads get stuck driving all the time, so let him sit shotgun while you explore the state together,” Latham said. “The Enchanted 8 provides eight different road trip experiences customized to what your dad likes.”
At the top of the list is an activity that many dads around the U.S. enjoy, but not many know that they can do in New Mexico: fly fishing. To offer inspiration for the incredible fly fishing found in the Land of Enchantment, last week the department released the 12th video in the New Mexico True Stories series, “The Guide.”
Set in the waters of the Pecos River, “The Guide” tells the story of World Champion fly fisherman and guide, Norman Maktima, who enjoys spending his spare time on the water with his father, Duane. Of all of the places Norman has cast his line, he says there is no place he would rather be than in New Mexico.
“There’s chile and there’s good fishing – why would I leave?” Maktima said.
