New Mexico Tourism Department Hosts Travel Tank

STATE News:

SANTA FE ― In honor of National Travel and Tourism Week, the New Mexico Tourism Department is inviting the public to take part in Travel Tank, a “Shark Tank” inspired promotional pitch competition.

The event will bring the some of the best and brightest tourism marketing minds in the state face-to-face with New Mexico’s travel writers and news media for the chance to win a story featuring their region.

The New Mexico Tourism Department is hosting Travel Tank to help promote tourism and its importance to the state’s economy. Similar to the popular game show Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs offer an elevator pitch to potential investors, regional marketing board members will have just five minutes to garner interest from the media judges or be turned away.

“The tourism industry is a bright spot in New Mexico’s economy, responsible for 15 percent of all new jobs created over the past five years,” Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Latham said. “Travel Tank is a fun and innovative way to bring attention to the people and places behind the record-breaking tourism growth in our state.”

As part of Travel Tank, the New Mexico Tourism Department will host top-tiered media as judges for the event:

  • Dean Staley, Anchor, KRQE
  • Rebecca Valdez, Executive Producer, KRQE and Fox New Mexico
  • Marisa Maez, Morning Anchor, KOAT
  • Chris Ramirez, Anchor/Reporter, KOB
  • Rosalie Rayburn, Features Reporter, The Albuquerque Journal
  • Kate Nelson, Managing Editor for New Mexico Magazine
  • Judith Fein, Travel Writer
  • Mark Ronchetti, Chief Meteorologist, KRQE and Fox New Mexico (Event Emcee)

To further promote National Travel and Tourism Week, the New Mexico Tourism Department is partnering with the U.S. Travel Association on a new social media campaign that highlights the people who work in tourism and hospitality across New Mexico and the country.

“National Travel and Tourism Week is a salute to travel in America as communities nationwide unite to showcase the impact of travel to policymakers, business leaders, and local media,” Latham said. “Participating in the ‘Faces of Travel’ social media campaign gives us an international platform to celebrate the 65,000 hardworking New Mexicans whose jobs are sustained by visitor spending.”

The Tourism Department collected photos from industry partners and travel and tourism leaders that showcase the state’s hardworking faces in action, along with a statement about the impact travel and tourism makes in their lives. The photos have been tagged with #NewMexicoTRUE Faces of Travel and can be viewed on the @NMTourism and @NewMexico Twitter accounts.
