New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office Celebrates Disability Pride With Accessibility Awards And NM STABLE Educational Video

SANTA FE — As Disability Pride Month comes to a close, the New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office will participate in the upcoming New Mexico Disability Pride Accessibility Awards, celebrating the state’s disability community and recognizing the ongoing progress toward improved accessibility and inclusion.

Hosted at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the annual awards recognize individuals and organizations whose work has advanced accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunity for the state’s disability community.

In 2025, the New Mexico State Treasurer’s Achieving a Better Life Experience (NM STABLE) program was honored with the Public Service Advocacy Award. This year, State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya will deliver the keynote address.

“Disability Pride Month reminds us that creating accessibility, inclusion, and independence for our friends and family with disabilities requires not only acknowledgement, but action,” Treasurer Montoya said. “The State Treasurer’s Office is committed to continuing our work to expand opportunity and autonomy for New Mexicans with disabilities through NM STABLE.”

That commitment is reflected through NM STABLE, a State Treasurer’s Office-administered program that provides tax-advantaged savings and investing accounts for New Mexicans with disabilities. Funds can be saved, invested, and spent on qualified disability-related expenses while protecting eligibility for federal benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. To help more New Mexicans learn how NM STABLE can support their or their loved ones’ financial futures, the State Treasurer’s Office released a new NM STABLE educational video explaining how the program works and its benefits.

In 2024, Treasurer Montoya facilitated the passing of state legislation (HB98 – 2024 Regular Session), removing clawbacks. The State Treasurer’s Office also highlighted several NM STABLE enhancements that took effect in 2026, including the elimination of monthly maintenance fees, higher contribution limits, and expanded eligibility by increasing the age of disability onset from 26 to 46. Additionally, through its partnership with the Ohio State Treasurer’s Office, NM STABLE provides a one-time $25 matching contribution to new account holders who open an account with an initial deposit of at least $25 through Dec. 31, 2026.
