New Mexico State Police Investigate Vehicular Homicide in Rio Arriba County

NMSP News:

State Police responded to the Espanola hospital Friday regarding a deceased 28-year-old female, later identified as Lisa Espinoza.

Espinoza had suffered blunt force trauma to her head and upper body and was brought to the hospital by Richard Trujillo, 42, Espinoza’s boyfriend.

Through the course of the investigation, it was learned Espinoza and Trujillo were consuming alcohol earlier in the day. They were drinking at their cabin and at the El Cuerno Bar in Cebolla. Later in the evening, they left the bar in Trujillo’s flatbed truck. As Trujillo was driving, Espinoza reportedly reached down from within the cab to pick something up, and fell out of the vehicle. Espinoza was then run over while they were traveling on Forest Road 131. Trujillo then transported Espinoza to the hospital.

After officers responded to the hospital and spoke with Trujillo, they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and conducted a DWI investigation. Trujillo was subsequently arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle and driving while license is suspended or revoked.

Trujillo was booked into the Rio Arriba County Detention Center.
