SANTA FE – Thirty-three New Mexico State Parks are open and ready to host visitors this Labor Day Weekend. State Parks offer a wide range of activities—from horseback riding to scuba diving, camping, hiking and fishing.

However, park officials recommend doing some advance planning to make your park visit as enjoyable—and safe—as possible. First, consider what activities you want to participate in, and find out which State Park accommodates them.

Most of that information is available on the Know Before You Go Page of the State Parks website.

In addition to information on which activities are available at individual State Parks, this page has tips on what gear to pack and specific safety precautions to take before leaving home. 

For instance, boaters are reminded to always wear a lifejacket when out on the water and to be aware of weather conditions. State law requires wearing a lifejacket in a canoe, kayak, or raft and children 12 years old and younger must wear a lifejacket while on the deck of a moving vessel.

Remember, weather conditions, construction, and other issues sometimes cause full or partial park closures. Two State Parks—Morphy Lake and Pecos Canyon—are closed as crews work to remediate fire damage in those areas.

Avoid the disappointment of encountering a closure by clicking Know Before You Go.

While planning it also would be a good idea to find out about Reservations and Day-Passes. That will make your entry into the park smoother.
