New Mexico School for the Arts Hosts Open House for Prospective Students

NMSA News:

New Mexico School for the Arts will hold an Open House for prospective students to the school 1-3 p.m., Dec. 6.

Eighth, 9th and 10th graders interested in learning more about NMSA are encouraged to attend, as well as all current applicants. The event is at New Mexico School for the Arts, 275 E. Alameda Street in Santa Fe.

NMSA provides access to a rigorous mastery arts and academic high school education for youth with passion and aptitude in the arts, leading to post-secondary learning, careers in the arts, and lives that contribute to society. NMSA is a public high school and admission is via blind auditions in any one of the four disciplines of dance, music, theater, and visual arts.

During the first hour of the open house, prospective students will be given an overview of the school, presented by Director Riis Gonzales and Head of School Cindy Montoya. Art Department chairs will also talk about the curriculum in their specific area in an informational forum. NMSA’s Residential Director Stephanie Wilton will present about NMSA’s residential program.

During the event’s second hour, students will attend a seminar for the department they have applied to or are interested in applying to, where they will receive information about what is expected for audition. Examples and tutorials will be given. Students will have the opportunity to apply to NMSA right after the event.

NMSA was a recipient of the national Arts Schools Network Exemplary School Designation at their annual conference in Denver earlier this year, and has been graded an “A” school for the third year in a row from the New Mexico Public Education Department.

NMSA is now accepting applications for school year 2015-2016. The application cycle closes in mid-January, and information on admission policies and the application process can be found on its website, www.NMSchoolForTheArts.org. NMSA provides access to a rigorous mastery arts and academic high school education for youth with passion and aptitude in the arts, leading to post-secondary learning, careers in the arts, and lives that contribute to society.
