New Mexico Arts and the New Mexico State Library are accepting applications for the 2025-2028 State Poet Laureate Program targeting applicants throughout the state. Application deadline is Friday, April 25, 2025.
The New Mexico State Poet Laureate Program aims to be actively present in communities in every part of New Mexico, offering accessible and enjoyable explorations in poetry reading and writing for both experienced poetry enthusiasts and novices alike.
The Poet Laureate will engage with communities across the state, with a goal of visiting as many of the 33 New Mexico counties and 23 recognized Tribes during the three-year term. The Poet Laureate will also read original poems at state events, develop and participate in educational outreach programs, create a statewide poetry project, and participate in judging poetry-related competitions. The Poet Laureate is paid $20,000 per year to cover all expenses related to fulfilling the responsibilities of the position, including travel costs.

The New Mexico State Poet Laureate Program celebrates and increases the visibility of poetry, arts, and culture throughout the state. It is designed to engage directly with New Mexicans, and to encourage the enjoyment of reading and writing poetry through interactive programs for people of all ages, and in geographically and culturally diverse areas.
