SANTA FE – The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (NMIAD)  welcomed President Joe Biden’s historic apology for the U.S. government’s boarding school policy, a formal recognition of the deep and lasting harm inflicted on Native American communities, including those in New Mexico.

The policy forcibly removed Native children from their families and culture, leaving lasting scars that continue to negatively affect tribal communities across the state and the nation.

The President’s statement marks a pivotal moment in recognizing the truth of this painful history and the ongoing need for healing and reconciliation. The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department reaffirms its commitment to working with tribal leaders, state agencies, and federal partners to address intergenerational trauma and justice for survivors and their families. The department recognizes the courage and strength of the victims who shared their experiences, bringing this issue to light.

“The boarding school policy caused deep and lasting harm to our families and our children, and the ramifications continue to burden Indian Country even today,” Cabinet Secretary Josett Monette said. “President Biden’s apology today is a recognition of these historical injustices, and we appreciate the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to a better future. New Mexico is proud to join them on a path toward healing and honoring the resilience of our Native communities.”

The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department continues to advocate policies and initiatives that promote healing, cultural preservation, and sustainable growth for the state’s Native populations. The department stands ready to work alongside the Biden Administration to ensure that today’s acknowledgment translates into meaningful action for all those affected.
