New Mexico House Speaker Brian Egolf And Majority Leader Sheryl Williams Stapleton Issue Joint Statement On Threat Of Military Force By President

House Speaker Brian Egolf

New Mexico House Democrats News:

“Today, on Election Day, our Nation is in crisis: a global pandemic continues to plague our communities, the rights and lives of African American men and people of color are being destroyed by a President who goes against the values of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – who stood firmly for Civil Rights through nonviolence and brought about peaceful movements.

Majority Leader Sheryl Williams Stapleton

The President is stoking the flames of hatred and division for his perceived personal political gain.

Despite the President’s empty boasts to the contrary, “law and order” doesn’t mean unleashing dogs and military on individuals who are utilizing their First Amendment rights. To use the heavy hand of force against citizens peacefully expressing frustration and anger over repeated violations of their rights and the rights of African Americans to live safely in communities is un-American and immoral.

The President’s threat to deploy the US military – against the wishes of governors and mayors – to put down peaceful protests is shocking; to do so would be illegal.

New Mexicans must not allow our state and our people to become pawns in the President’s desire to take us back to the 1950s and 60’s, which would be destructive to America and all Americans.

Americans are looking to our leaders for actual solutions: that uphold our constitutional rights, that end the violence in our streets and acknowledges that black lives matter.”
