AAUW News:

Eighth grade girls from across New Mexico including Sarah Crotzer and Malea Joyce from Los Alamos Middle School converged on the campus of New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) in July for a one-week hands-on residential camp to explore their interest in science, math, engineering or technology (STEM) careers.

Sponsored by the American Association of University Women () and New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU), 48 girls were immersed in a world that empowered and encouraged them to think about themselves as future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer specialists.

Camp attendees stayed in the dorms at NMHU and attended challenging classes and hands-on workshops taught by university instructors and professionals in a wide range of fields. The camp program included hands-on core classes in Computer Modeling and Simulations of Chemical Reactions, Solar Energy and its uses, Designing and Developing Apps, and the Biomechanics of the Heart.

The girls had many opportunities to meet women in real-world science careers, and a career night to meet dozens of professionals who shared their personal experiences.

More information about Tech Trek can be found here.

Parents of the girls who attended the camp paid only a small registration fee, because of the generous support of sponsors that included Los Alamos National Laboratory, Verizon, Lockheed Martin/Sandia National Labs, Symantec as well as generous contributions from the AAUW-NM branches and members.

“We are changing lives and potentially bolstering New Mexico’s economy with this program,” AAUW-NM Co-President Karyl Lyne said. “All of the women involved in planning and teaching at Tech Trek were inspired by the girls’ passion and enthusiasm for science and technology. We are already looking forward to 2016.”
