We all deserve access to high quality, affordable healthcare. But for far too long, New Mexico families have been forced to delay or go without the medical care they need because healthcare is too expensive. This legislative session, our state has a historic opportunity to open up the Medicaid program and ensure every New Mexican has access to affordable care.
Medicaid is a robust, comprehensive program that already provides high-quality care to more than 40% of our residents. Medicaid Forward will unlock affordable healthcare coverage for all New Mexicans. Medicaid Forward allows residents whose incomes are too high to qualify for Medicaid to instead purchase an affordable plan through the program.
House Bill 400, sponsored by Rep. Reena Szczepanski, Speaker Javier Martínez, Sen. Siah Correa Hemphill, and Sen. Leo Jaramillo, would set the wheels in motion for Medicaid Forward and is scheduled to be heard in its first committee hearing Monday morning. Let’s make our voices heard!
The House Health & Human Services Committee has asked to keep public comment brief on the day of the hearing. Instead, please spend some time throughout the weekend contacting committee members by calling their office and asking them to pass HB 400 to provide affordable healthcare for all New Mexicans.
