Civil rights leader César Chávez

ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions announces that the Serve New Mexico Commission, in partnership with AmeriCorps programs throughout the state, will celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights activist César Chávez with a Day of Service today, March 31.
The Serve New Mexico Commission, which oversees the state’s AmeriCorps program, is under the administration of the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions.
AmeriCorps New Mexico members with Rocky Mountain Youth Corps and DreamTree Project will be help three Taos schools (Taos High School Greenhouse, Arroyo Seco Elementary School and the Enos Garcia Elementary School) with gardening, greenhouse maintenance, seed planting and building support structures, as well as facilitating a learning session on César Chávez and food security.
AmeriCorps members with the Boys and Girls Club of Central New Mexico, The NACA Inspired Schools Network (NISN) and Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico will serve meals at Rock at Noon Day in Albuquerque and help with facility organization and cleaning projects.
Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico will also coordinate food distribution projects at the Otero County fairgrounds in Alamogordo with EcoServants AmeriCorps members and deploy AmeriCorps members in Albuquerque to assist with boxing and sorting produce in the RRFB warehouse. Members will also have an educational component led by a RRFB AmeriCorps alumna.
AmeriCorps members with Families and Youth Inc. in Las Cruces will take their after-school program participants to J Paul Taylor Academy for a presentation from the La Semilla Food Center to learn about César Chávez, gardening, and eating what we grow.
“I’m very pleased that the Serve Mexico Commission and our dedicated AmeriCorps members are saying, “Sí se puede”, and will carry out service projects in honor of César Chávez,” said Serve New Mexico Executive Director Samuel Sokolove. “Especially when so many families throughout our state are still experiencing food insecurity.”
